Getting a new set of dentures is a game-changer. It means you can finally enjoy that steak at the backyard BBQ or smile for family photos without a second thought. But, like anything worth having, they need a bit of looking after. We often see patients who are trying their best but making a few common errors that can actually shorten the life of their new teeth.
How to Properly Care for Your Dentures
Learning how to properly care for your dentures doesn’t have to be a chore. In fact, it’s mostly about avoiding a few “common sense” traps that aren’t actually that helpful for your smile. Here is what we suggest you skip to keep your dentures fitting perfectly and looking bright.
1. Don’t Reach for the “Extra White” Toothpaste
It’s a natural instinct. You want your dentures to stay white, so you grab a tube of whitening toothpaste. In reality, this is one of the most common mistakes people make. Most standard toothpastes – especially the ones for whitening – are very abrasive.
Real teeth have tough enamel, but dentures are made of a special acrylic that is much softer. Scrubbing them with regular toothpaste is like using sandpaper on a car’s paint job. It creates tiny scratches that trap food and stains, making them look dull over time. Instead, we recommend using a mild, non-abrasive cleanser or even just some simple dish soap to keep things clean without the damage.
2. Avoid the “Boiling Water” Myth
Sometimes people think that the best way to get things “hospital clean” is to use boiling water. Please, don’t do this! High heat can actually warp the acrylic.
Once the shape of your denture changes – even by a tiny fraction of a millimetre – it won’t sit right on your gums. This leads to sore spots, slippage, and a whole lot of discomfort. When you’re rinsing or soaking, lukewarm or cool water is your best friend. It gets the job done safely without changing the fit we worked so hard to perfect for you.
3. Never “DIY” Your Repairs
We get it – accidents happen. Maybe you dropped them in the sink while cleaning, or a small piece chipped off while you were eating. It can be tempting to reach for the “super glue” in the kitchen drawer to save a trip to the clinic.
This is a big no-no for two reasons. First, most household glues are toxic and aren’t meant to be in your mouth. Second, even a slightly crooked home repair can mess up your bite, leading to jaw pain and headaches. If something breaks, give us a shout at True Fit Denture Clinic. We can usually handle repairs quickly and safely, ensuring everything stays aligned.
4. Don’t Skip the “Gums” Part of the Routine
When people focus on how to properly care for your dentures, they sometimes forget about the mouth they sit in. Even if you don’t have any natural teeth left, your gums and tongue still need attention.
Bacteria can still build up on your soft tissues, which can lead to bad breath or even gum infections. Every morning and night, give your gums a gentle rub with a soft washcloth or a very soft toothbrush. It keeps the blood flowing and keeps your mouth healthy, which makes wearing dentures much more comfortable.
